The Now and Future of Technology

WIFI - Next Generation Edition
Technology has always fascinated me, as I'm sure it fascinates many of you. I think it all started and ended for me with Windows2000/Linux Gnome. I learned those 2 well - 10 years ago. Since then, it feels like my clocks kicked into warp-speed and BAM! Here I am... 2011. I've always been thrifty about electronics since they constantly depreciate by the second - so never bothered to keep up to the same extent (regretfully).
It's incredible to see how far we've come; how much we depend on the latest tech; how it keeps us craving for more... and how frustrating it is when (in our minds) a simple task is not so simple! It seems as well that everyday I'm relearning new tasks and new ways of doing things.
I've decided to put an end to all this none-sense and start playing catch-up and educate myself on the now tech and the things to come.
So - to start us off, I dove into one of my major pet peeves - WiFi hot spots.
Ever feel like it should be a no-brainer? I push the connect button - it finds Wi-Fi - it connects (1minute later)... It's a damn akward minute at that...
Well - good news! They (CSR) are working on the solution!
Our future handhelds will be wielding a tech in the works called iEEE 802.11ai aka "Fast Link". According to Klaus Buehring, VP of Tech Dev at CSR, "the iEEE 802.11ai standard will significantly change the way mobile Wi-Fi is used by reducing the time it takes to associate with a hotspot from tens of seconds to less than a second while greatly reducing the energy required."
This is truly awesome news. Not only will I be able to immediately connect once in a hotspot - it will also be energy efficient! This is some of the few advances that will be coming to a cell phone/mobile device near you! When can you expect this you may ask? They foresee a massive roll out some time in 2016. Though it is unclear if this will be available to manufacturers by that date or if it will be in the consumers hands - its something to be desired and a solution is in the works!

Thank you for your comment Ricki. I think that Mac/Apple has a great following - however I think it's best to expose them to programming more than anything else. I'm an IT solutions provider and work with $100million to fortune 500 companies. I've yet to sell any Mac products at a corporate level. Microsoft owns most of the "commercial" market and though we don't think much of windows mobile - that is the primary mobile OS in any mobile workforce (followed by Win CE). There is talks about Android being an optional OS for some of the "smaller" manufacturers, however security breaches are still a concern. According to the D&B Apple sits at $65,225,000,000 in sales (and that's software and hardware!). Microsoft sits at $62,484,000,000 in sales and that's mainly software. You bundle their sales with hardware (IBM, HP, Motorola etc...) and I guarantee you AT LEAST double Apple sales.

I'm trying to get my sons to get certified in everything they can and am focusing on Mac right now. I really think Mac will be taking totally over in the future.
